Hamsters naturally use sand to keep their fur clean, remove excess oil, and maintain good hygiene. A proper hamster sand bath is not just for fun — it is an important part of their daily care routine.

Our Hamster Natural Unscented Sand is carefully prepared with your hamster's safety in mind:

Natural and unscented – No artificial fragrances or added scents. Hamsters have sensitive respiratory systems, so scented sand should be avoided.

Low dust – Our sand is washed with plenty of water to remove most dust particles, making it safer and more comfortable for your hamster to dig and roll in.

Perfect particle size – The sand is carefully sieved to remove larger, rough particles. Sand that is too coarse may feel uncomfortable on your hamster's delicate skin and paws.

Avoid using dusty sand, scented sand, or even desert sand, as natural desert sand can still contain fine dust that may not be suitable for hamsters.

Some owners use cat litter or clumping litter as an alternative, but these products are designed for cats, not hamsters. Many cat litters contain ingredients that can be harmful to hamsters, such as fragrances, deodorizing chemicals, dust-control additives, and clumping agents like sodium bentonite clay. These materials can irritate a hamster’s sensitive nose and lungs, and clumping litter may also be unsafe if swallowed. They also do not provide the right texture for a proper hamster sand bath. Hamsters need clean sand that allows them to naturally remove excess oil from their fur.

Occasionally, hamsters may also use their sand bath as a toilet. For the best hygiene, we recommend changing the sand regularly — approximately every 3 days or more frequently if heavily soiled. Otherwise, skin issues and fur loss can follow, which can mean expensive vet visits. To change the sand, pour away the old sand, wipe the toilet dry, and add about 1 cm of fresh sand, or more if desired.
